“Glass” serves as the lead single from London-based singer-songwriter Frank Joshua‘s upcoming fifth studio album. Created alongside producer Tony White, the track explores themes of identity and fragility through a neo-psychedelic, dream-pop lens. Marking his 49th release over the past five-ish years, this cinematic piece utilizes shimmering textures and hypnotic repetitions to capture the realizations of maturity. He previously caught our ears with the standout albums Sense Life and Talk Of Things.
Lush guitar twangs pair with a dreamy vocal refrain as the track gets underway. “Making castles, drawing figments, getting old,” the mesmerizing vocals maneuver, bolstered by caressing piano and chiming guitars in the ensuing “it came to us all in the fall” proclamation. Layered vocals envelop within the delightful dream-pop production, particularly in the shift from the “I wasn’t blind / I was fearless” solemnity into the returning “making castles” hypnotic refrain.
The two-minute turn is especially resonant, infusing synth aspects alongside a chamber-pop glow, with sweeping orchestration combining with the vocals for a warming, replay-inducing allure. Themes of perseverance shine in the final lines, the “made of unbreakable/unshakeable glass” segment being presented with fervent tonal appeal, before a serenely absorbing “it came to us all in the fall” send-off. “Glass” is another excellent piece of songwriting within Frank Joshua’s prolific, thoroughly immersive discography.
