A poignant debut EP from Glenrothes, Scotland-based artist Ryan Page, Used To Be You navigates the wreckage of a breakup through a haunting, atmospheric folk sound. The productions blend trickling acoustics with a dreamlike resonance, capturing a vulnerable search for healing.
A heartfelt, stirring opener, “Nothing Helps” melds trickling acoustic beauty with sorrowful lyricism, admitting “don’t know where I belong / I know it’s not here.” The lingering emotions from a breakup, with one still “calling your name” despite not being near, show a palpable sense of yearning. “Why’d you have to go, and leave me alone?” Page’s enveloping vocals continue, capturing isolation within a post-breakup immersion. Subsequent track “Stay” casts a more tranquil spell, its bleak “not the same” perspectives resonating alongside murky acoustics and twangy electric adornments.
The EP’s title track is another gem. Glistening guitar twangs and solemn acoustics converge again with ample impact, as Page’s vocals let out an enjoyably retrospective quality in depictions of photographs and old memories. A dreamy atmospheric charm emanates from the lush tonal display and consistent song structure, while “I Was Wrong” arrives later with a sort of personal reckoning — admitting to personal mistakes while remembering late-night conversations and warm memories. A push to reclaim one’s identity and “free myself” invigorates, framing a breakup with themes of personal healing and compelling introspection. Used To Be You is a thoroughly enjoyable EP from Ryan Page.
