Little Grandad have shared debut tracks ‘Sleepwalking’ and ‘Unmasked’, and announced three consecutive headline shows in London.
The band was formed by brothers Jack and Harry Lower, who completed the line-up with guitarist, trumpet player and fellow songwriter Ned Ashcroft, as well as drummer Jimmy Brennan.
Initially bonding over a love of Chet Baker’s music, the band have managed to play an impressive number of live shows over the past year where they have showcased a range of music that blends Americana, Brooklyn-inspired slacker-rock, and British indie.
Now, with over 70 live shows under their belt, Little Grandad have dropped their first recorded music – lead singles ‘Sleepwalking’ and ‘Unmasked’. Both were produced by Kev Jones at The Church and The Communion Studios, and come following the band holding a sold-out headline show at the 100 Club last week.
For ‘Sleepwalking’, the track takes on a breezy, sombre feel throughout, with the singer crooning “I’ve been sleepwalking, through my life/ Yes I’ve been sleepwalking, drifting through time/ And I’ve been wasting away, I’m burning through the years,” in the atmospheric verse, backed by country-inspired acoustic guitar.
With ‘Unmasked’, the band capture a more melancholic, introspective feeling throughout, and gradually strip back the instrumentals until the song focuses on the vocals and touching trumpet melody.
“Oh babe please don’t ever change/ Don’t let them ruin your tomorrow days/ You were always there through my comfort and my pain,” Harry sings. “And I’m well aware this could’ve been my worst mistake/ The thought of letting you slip away/ I now watch from the sidelines/ And I’m barely that familiar face.”
With the new songs, Little Grandad also announced three consecutive headline shows set to take place in London this summer.
They include residency dates at Shacklewell Arms, The George Tavern and The Windmill on July 8, 9 and 10 respectively. Tickets go on sale on May 13 at 10am BST via Dice, and pre-sale options open from May 12.
As well as the three headline shows, the band also have a number of festival appearances lined-up, including at End Of The Road alongside Super Furry Animals, Kurt Vile, Fat Dog and more, and at Dot To Dot where Lambrini Girls, Fcukers and NewDad are headlining.
