Signal-23 – ‘Pillars’ EP

The debut EP from Signal-23, Pillars is a dark, immersive exploration of atmospheric electronica. Utilizing drum machines and a modified Omnichord, the bi-coastal duo (San Diego / New York) balances heavy sub-bass with expansive textures, mirroring an intriguing intersection of human and machine perspectives.

A haunting soundscape emerges in “Pieces” as the EP gets underway. A contrast of serene samples, such as bird-chirping, aligns with a swell of spacey synth intensity. The electronic tones gradually overtake the lush setting, before shifting back into gorgeous tranquility at midpoint. There, sounds of trickling water pair with resonant, melodic synths, creating a sound that resembles a cross of Oneohtrix Point Never and Boards of Canada. The subsequent “Pillars” is equally captivating, delighting in its more rhythmic undercurrent and effervescent synth tones. The opening one-two punch shows a clear capacity to traverse both dreamy introspection and blaring vigor.

Another standout track on the EP is “Decay,” fully embracing the darker electronic realm as flickers of synths meld with a buzzing bass entrancement. Shuffling, playful rhythms then enamor as glistening synth lines progress forward, crafting a soundscape fit for bursting through galaxies in a futuristic spaceship. A heavier second half plays with cathartic, invigorating appeal, before fading out into a warm buzzing. Brimming with emotional, atmospheric electronic gems, Pillars is a fantastic EP from Signal-23.
