A resonating debut single for Philly-based quartet Women in Sports, “Thirteen” is an evolving rock success — resonating in its melodic drive and thematic hold, depicting a relationship gone wrong with playful introspection.
Subdued guitar pulses and retrospective vocals open, proposing a what-if scenario regarding a past show, and wondering: “Would I be able to remember hearing my favorite song / Without picturing your face?” The production continuously stirs between the more laid-back guitar moments and erupting ardor, the latter especially resonant as twanging guitars in the visceral “I dream almost every night that you had died” admission. The track pairs a melodic garage-rock production with gripping lyrical sincerity, tracing a relationship in the context of performative gestures and cathartic self-respect, concluding “No I didn’t deserve all of that / All of that.”
The impressive, emerging act comprises Katie Masterson (You’re Laughing), Rebecca Emont (Poor Martha), Tyler Masterson (Poor Martha), and Katie Miller (Kate Dressed Up).
