The Apothecary Diaries has been one of the most beloved anime series of the 2020s, despite being different from the usual battle shonen that usually hit it big. The series set in the fictional country of Li, styled after medieval China, and tells the story of an apothecary named Mao Mao, who works as an apothecary in the imperial court and often solves mysteries involving  poisonings happening throughout the palace. The series has elements of mystery and political drama and involves a skillset unique for an anime series, being an expert who knows a lot about medicine and poison. Oriental Light and Magic, the studio best known for Pokémon, produced some of the most stunning visuals seen in the anime medium. We are getting more of this series in 2026, even more than expected.

TOHO Animation released a trailer commemorating the 2nd Anniversary of the series (and the announcement of Season 3):

A new season was totally expected, but we also know a movie is also coming. Season 3’s first cour is streaming October 2026 for the Fall anime season and a movie will screen in Japan in December 2026 (the Western release will probably be a bit later). Season 3 cour 2 premieres April 2027. The movie will be an original story created by the author of the original light novel, Natsu Hyūga. Most likely, the third season will end up on Crunchyroll (with both subtitled and English dubbed versions), like the first two seasons.

Seasons one and two were already highly acclaimed for the beautiful animation, memorable characters, and unique premise, and fan expectations for season 3 should be accordingly high. It is quite rare that an anime outside the battle shonen genre receives such widespread popularity among casual anime fans to the extent Apothecary Diaries blew up. It is probably one of the biggest titles announced so far for 2026, and fans should be excited for a new season and a movie with a story by the original creator.
